What Drives Him

“I am energised by the challenge of unravelling complex, legacy system architectures and turning them into simple, sustainable environments. My focus is on making high-performance computing accessible, eliminating technical friction for data teams, and building strong, collaborative relationships with the people who rely on those platforms every day.”

Expertise & Background

Lachlan brings over 25 years of hands-on Linux and systems administration experience to Selerity. His career spans extensive work across high-performance computing (HPC), cloud environments, and enterprise data platforms within the university, medical research, and technology sectors.

Prior to joining Selerity, Lachlan spent five years at Posit (formerly RStudio) as a Senior Technical Support Engineer, delivering front-line support, custom diagnostic tools, and system architecture guidance for enterprise clients across the Asia-Pacific region. His background includes managing complex research computing platforms at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, the University of Melbourne, and UNSW.

His core technical expertise includes:

  • Posit Ecosystem: Advanced support, installation, and configuration across Posit Workbench, Posit Connect, Posit Package Manager, and Posit Desktop.
  • Linux Systems Administration: Over 25 years of Linux administration (Ubuntu LTS, RHEL, CentOS), user authentication integration, and infrastructure management.
  • HPC & Container Orchestration: Deep practical experience with Slurm workload management, high-performance compute clusters, Kubernetes, and Helm deployment troubleshooting.
  • Process Automation & Tooling: Skilled in GitOps workflows, Python, Bash, Go, and integrating AI assistance into code analysis and diagnostic routines.

How He Works

Lachlan approaches system design with a consultative, pragmatic mindset. Having worked extensively in low-resource and highly regulated environments—including air-gapped systems and medical research facilities—he excels at establishing clear data boundaries and robust operational processes without overcomplicating the solution.

He is a firm believer in “horizontal management” and transparent collaboration. Lachlan actively mentors colleagues in his areas of expertise while seeking out opportunities to learn from others. Known for his ability to manage stakeholder expectations honestly and effectively, he ensures technical feasibility and clear scope alignment before delivering complex migrations or deployments.

His Style Is

Resourceful and Methodical. Defined by systems discovery and practical problem-solving, Lachlan thrives on taking intricate technical challenges and distilling them into maintainable, well-documented outcomes. His approachable communication style bridges the gap between complex infrastructure engineering and end-user analytics teams, making him a trusted guide for clients navigating platform modernisation.
